Pastor's Pen

In this season of Thanksgiving we have so much for which to be grateful. God has kept us, God has sustained us, God has strengthened our hearts and minds. In spite of the enormous challenges we have faced, we are more aware than ever that God is on our side.

However, as we give thanks we must also be aware that many others, within our midst and around the world, are experiencing enormous pain and suffering. The nations of Africa face drought, famine and a burgeoning AIDS epidemic. Over population in Asia has begun to strain resources and affect the quality of life for millions. The threat of nuclear proliferation and possible war looms over Pakistan, India and North Korea.

Even with the reality of worldwide suffering, as we give thanks we must not forget that hospices are filled with dying patients.  Retrenchment is driving hundreds of thousands out of work and record mortgage foreclosures will render untold numbers in our country homeless during this season of Thanksgiving.

As we have enjoyed our Thanksgiving dinner, relatives, and football, our prayer is that we will never forget that our blessings are not because we have not suffered what others have suffered.  We are blessed because in spite of war, famine and poverty, we serve a good God who loves us all, cares for us all, and never leaves the faithful to face life without God's comforting presence and love.
