Pastor's Pen

We have so much for which to thank God. We particularly give God glory, honor, and praise for the experience our young people had last Saturday at Shenandoah National Park. A busload of youth, advisors, parents, and friends made the two hour drive to the park to begin an early day of prayer, meditation and fun.

At the early session, the young people were given instructions about quiet and stillness as a way to commune with God and with nature.  It was a powerful moment as the sun crept over the eastern hills and the chill mountain air insured that everyone was awake and alert. After a time of stillness, I addressed the group on the significance and power of prayer. One particularly moving moment was when everyone gathered around me, laid hands on me and prayed for me, my family, and our church.

Next, we gathered in a cabin for breakfast, (celebrating God’s gift of heat) and then after breakfast spent some time understanding our vision and theme for the year, One Vision, One Village, One Victory. The questions they raised were well thought out and relevant.  Questions included such things as “How do you deal with ….. ; How do you get along with older sisters; how do we get more people to volunteer to help out at church.”

The day was led by the Boy Scouts and laced with fun.  I also learned that my football days are but a distant memory! The afternoon was spent exploring Luray Caverns, which was a wonderful time of learning as well as fun. Then, the day ended with a peaceful and safe bus trip home.

It was a great day on the mountain, physically and spiritually. This trip reconfirmed my belief that Shiloh has some of the best youth anywhere.  May God bless and keep them all.
