Message From Pastor Smith Title

Sunday, February 11, 2007

Today we celebrate with the YACS and the Boy Scouts on their annual day.  The YACS (Your Active Christians of Shiloh) were organized on February 14, 1958 as the Young Adult Christians of Shiloh.  From that time until the present day, they have been in the forefront of many worthwhile activities.  More about the history of this worthwhile organization can be found in todayûs Spirit.  We thank God for them and pray Godû richest blessings upon their continued good work.

We also honor the work of our Boy Scouts.  At a time when violence, drug abuse and other forms of crime remain all too prevalent, scouting is a wonderful alternative for young people to learn higher values and skills.  Our Shiloh church family owes a debt of gratitude to the leaders of our scouting program who have worked long and hard to instill the values that will help our young people as they confront temptations and decisions each day.  We are proud of our scouts and their leaders and we wish them all the very best on their special day.

As we observe Black History Month we are delighted that our own Lorraine Miller was appointed the Clerk of the Congress of the United States.  However, did you know that she was recognized on the Tom Joyner Morning Show as a little known fact of Black history because she is the first African American to serve in this office?  We again congratulate Lorraine and express to her how proud we are of her achievements.

Discipleship in Godûs village is the topic of our Bible Studies through the month of February. We have already focused on worship, Bible Study, prayer and service as key marks of living oneûs life for Christ.  Next week we will look at Stewardship. As Godûs disciples our every wish is to live so that our lives conform to Godûs will.

The scriptures for this week address the qualities of persons who live fully for God.  Jeremiah 17 and Psalm One speak of the fidelity and constancy of persons who have given their lives to God.  The Psalmist says they ûshall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water.û  Their lives will be productive and fruitful. They will possess joy and happiness. The hot winds of the desert will not wilt their leaves because they are planted by living waters.

Luke 6:17-49 offers Jesusû sermon on the plain. It is quite similar to Matthewûs Sermon on the Mount.  In verse 31, Luke offers the foundational principle for a Godly life, ûDo unto others as you would have them do unto you.û

On Thursday evening at 7:30 p.m., we as a church family are attempting to understand what it means to be a disciple in Godûs village.  We encourage all members to come and join us as we grow together in the study of Godûs Word.

OUR PURPOSE

Building the Village by Caring

Concept: Our pastor, the Reverend Wallace Charles Smith, envisions a holistic Ministry of Building by Caring, which includes a 3-tier approach - Care for Ourselves (spiritually), Care for Our Relations (family, friends and members), and Care for Our Community (outreach).  In building our capacity to care we will also create an atmosphere that will increase our church's membership, winning more souls to Christ; they will know we are Christians by our love;.
